Camden County Superior Court Overview
New Jersey runs one statewide trial court, the Superior Court, and it is split into geographic units called vicinages. Camden County is Camden Vicinage, also known as Vicinage 4. The trial court here handles the bulk of serious legal matters in the county. That includes felony-level crimes, larger civil suits, divorce and custody, foreclosures, and contested estates. The work is organized by division and part, so a single courthouse holds several distinct dockets under one roof.
The principal location is the Camden County Hall of Justice at 101 South 5th Street, Camden, NJ 08103. Press material from the New Jersey Judiciary names this building again and again for Camden Superior Court proceedings. The criminal records room also sits at the Hall of Justice. The broad list of courts and how they connect is laid out on the New Jersey Courts overview page, which describes the unified system from the Supreme Court down to the municipal level.

Superior Court vs Municipal Court in Camden County
Camden County has two trial-level courts that touch most residents. The Superior Court handles serious crimes and larger civil and family matters. The Municipal Court handles local, lower-level matters within a single town. The difference matters because the two courts hold different records and sit in different buildings. A traffic ticket and a felony charge do not live in the same place. The comparison below sorts out which court hears what.
| Superior Court | Municipal Court | |
|---|---|---|
| Jurisdiction | Countywide trial court for Camden Vicinage | Local court for one town, such as the City of Camden |
| Case Types | Indictable crimes, larger civil suits, divorce, custody, foreclosure, general equity, contested probate | Traffic and parking tickets, ordinance violations, disorderly persons offenses, local complaints |
| Location | Camden County Hall of Justice, 101 S. 5th St. | City Hall, 520 Market St., 4th Floor (City of Camden) |
Each town in the county runs its own municipal court, so a ticket follows the town where it was issued. Serious charges that begin in a municipal court can be sent up to the Superior Court. The City of Camden Municipal Court posts its sessions, prosecutors, and contact details on its own municipal court page.
How a Case Moves Through the System
New Jersey stacks its courts in a clear order. A case can start low and climb on appeal. Knowing the path helps you guess where an older record might sit and which court would hold a final ruling. The flow runs from the local level up to the state's top court.
Court path: Municipal Court › Superior Court › Appellate Division › Supreme Court of New Jersey
- Local tickets, ordinance cases, and minor complaints begin in a Municipal Court.
- Indictable crimes, larger civil suits, and family matters are heard in the Superior Court.
- A party who loses can ask the Appellate Division to review the trial court ruling.
- The Supreme Court of New Jersey is the last stop and the final word on state law.
The Tax Court runs to the side of this ladder as a separate statewide trial court for tax and property-tax appeals. Its decisions can also be reviewed by the Appellate Division.
Civil, Criminal, and Family Divisions
The trial court is not one big docket. It is several. The Law Division holds two parts. The Civil Part hears money suits, contract disputes, personal injury claims, and other civil matters above the small-claims line. The Criminal Part hears indictable offenses, which are the more serious crimes that often start with a complaint or grand jury indictment. Each part keeps its own files and its own calendar.
The Chancery Division also splits into parts. The Family Part hears divorce, custody, child support, and domestic violence matters. General Equity handles foreclosures and cases that ask the court to order or stop an action rather than award money. The Probate Part steps in only when an estate is contested, since routine probate runs through the Surrogate instead. The Special Civil Part rounds things out with smaller civil claims, small claims, and landlord-tenant cases. To pull the actual files from any of these parts, see the Camden County court records page and the court dockets page.
Divorce files carry tighter rules than most. Copies of divorce documents go only to a party or an attorney of record unless a court order allows wider release. That limit applies even though the case is in the open Family Part docket.
Searching Camden County Superior Court Cases
Trial court files are not on the county government website. They live in the statewide Judiciary databases. The starting point is the NJ Courts Find a Case page, which links separate public tools for civil and foreclosure cases, criminal cases, criminal judgments, judgment liens, and Tax Court matters. A docket number opens a case fastest. Without one, use full party names and a date range to trim the results.
Criminal record functions for the county sit at the Camden criminal records room in the Hall of Justice. The NJ Courts criminal records room page lists the Camden location and explains how to reach the records staff. For deeper detail on charges and case history, the arrest records page covers booking and criminal court files in full.
Note: Federal cases tied to Camden are filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and do not appear in the state Find a Case tool.
Camden Recovery Court
The Superior Court runs more than ordinary trials. Camden Vicinage operates a Recovery Court, a problem-solving program for nonviolent offenders who struggle with addiction. Instead of a standard sentence, eligible defendants enter phases of intensive drug and alcohol treatment under close court supervision. The goal is recovery and a clean exit from the justice system, not just a conviction. Participants check in often and answer to a judge through each phase.
The Camden program has deep roots. It began in 1996 as one of the state's early pilot recovery courts. By a February 2025 Judiciary release, it counted 496 participants and had graduated 1,075 people. That release marked a graduation ceremony in Courtroom 63 at the Camden County Hall of Justice, with a Superior Court judge presiding. Prosecutors, deputy public defenders, and an alumni group all took part, which shows how many offices feed into one recovery docket.
County Offices Near the Court
Several offices sit close to the Hall of Justice but handle different records. Sending a request to the right one saves time. The Camden County Clerk keeps land records, deeds, trade names, and election services. The Sheriff handles court security, civil process, and foreclosure sales. The Prosecutor runs criminal cases for the county. Each office has its own address, and none of them is the same as the trial court records room.
